Our History

The story of Kingston College begins in 1925 with a bold and revolutionary act of courage. In an era when colonial Jamaica denied secondary education to poor black boys, Bishop of Jamaica Dr. G.F.C. DeCarteret envisioned something extraordinary - a school that would break down social barriers and provide quality education to those who needed it most. With Bishop Percival Gibson as the first headmaster, Kingston College opened its doors as a beacon of hope and opportunity. The founding of Kingston College was nothing short of groundbreaking in colonial Jamaica. At a time when the social structure dictated that poor black boys should receive only primary education, our school stood as a defiant challenge to this unjust system. The founders understood that education was the key to breaking cycles of poverty and social inequality, and they were determined to provide a pathway to success for young men who had been systematically excluded from higher learning. From its earliest days, Kingston College established itself as more than just a school - it was a movement for social change. The institution's mission to produce leaders of high moral character and Christian values while providing rigorous academic preparation created a unique educational environment. Students were not only challenged intellectually but were also instilled with the principles of good citizenship and community service that would guide them throughout their lives. As the decades passed, Kingston College continued to evolve while staying true to its founding principles. The school's commitment to excellence attracted dedicated educators and ambitious students, creating a legacy of achievement that spans generations. Our alumni have gone on to become leaders in every sector of Jamaican society and beyond, carrying with them the values and education they received within our walls. Today, nearly a century after its founding, Kingston College remains as relevant and vital as ever. We continue to serve the community with the same revolutionary spirit that inspired our founders, adapting to modern challenges while maintaining the high standards of character and academic excellence that have defined us since 1925. Our story is one of perseverance, vision, and the transformative power of education - a legacy we proudly carry forward into the future.
